Jakab Badacsony specializes in Pinot Noir alongside other local varieties. Their vineyards are rooted in diverse soils on volcanic bedrock, from basalt-rich terrain to red sandstone and sandy-limestone, reflecting the region’s distinct terroir.
Their wines range from elegant and reductive styles to complex, full-bodied expressions. Committed to minimal intervention and sustainability, the winery follows organic practices and gentle pruning to ensure low yields and high concentration, creating wines that capture the essence of the Balaton wine region.
Their 14-hectare vineyard is spread across three distinct locations: the Syrah grows on Badacsonylábdihegy, the Kéknyelű and Vulcanus thrive on the slopes of Mount Badacsony, and the Pinot Noir is cultivated in Kővágóőrs, on the Küszöb-orra mountain, at an elevation of 240–260 metres above sea level. All three sites belong to the Badacsony wine district, which itself is part of the renowned Balaton wine region.
The unique characteristics of these three locations are reflected not only in the grape varieties they cultivate but also in the diverse soils that nourish them.
The majority of their vineyards, planted with Pinot Noir, are rooted in a subsoil of red sandstone, known for its excellent water retention and occasional clay deposits. Given the vineyard’s size and topography, areas with brown forest soil can also be found just beneath the surface. This red sandstone has long been a defining feature of the region—many of the houses in the surrounding villages are built on foundations made from this distinctive stone.
Their Syrah, planted alongside Viognier, grows in a much lighter, looser, sandy-limestone soil, offering a sharp contrast to the heavier soils of their other plots.
For their white varieties, the indigenous Kéknyelű and Vulcanus, they have chosen the most quintessential Badacsony soil: dense, rigid basalt on the mountain slopes. This volcanic bedrock imparts a strikingly unique, mineral, and salty character to the wines produced from these grapes.
